Intro

Dublin happens to be on the water and if you’re a water sports lover, you’ll find a surprising number of activities here and you can skip the shopping, museums and city tour this time!

By the way, we live in Ireland (second home) for many years now, coming from Germany. We have travelled the island again and again over many years and therefore know it very well.

In this article I’ll give you some tips for water sports activities in and around Dublin:

Kayak paddling on the River Liffey in Dublin Harbour

The River Liffey flows through the centre of Dublin, through the harbour and then into the sea. Here you can hire a kayak and see Dublin and the harbour from the water. Hire company: City Kayaking.

River Rafting on the outskirts of Dublin

And back to the River Liffey: it has several weirs and barrages outside the city that are navigable. There is a rafting provider there where you can join a group or hire your own raft. Provider: Rafting.ie.

Sea kayaking off the Howth Peninsula

Just outside Dublin is the beautiful peninsula of Howth, which is also easy to reach by public transport from the city centre. There you can join a sea kayaking tour. Provider: Shearwater Sea Kayaking. There is also a second provider here: Extreme Time Off.

Scuba diving off the Howth Peninsula

And again we are in the harbour of Howth, where you can also go diving. By that I mean scuba diving, which is compressed air diving at a PADI dive centre. Provider: Feelgood Scuba.

Scuba diving in Dublin Bay

Bray is a suburb at the southern end of Dublin and a seaside resort with a long history. There you will find Oceandivers, a large 5-star PADI dive centre, which also offers diving tours in Dublin Bay. Provider: Oceandivers.

Kite surfing and SUP paddling off Dublin at Dollymount Beach

Just before Howth there is an offshore sandbank in the bay, Dollymount beach. On the shore promenade you will find a water sports shop with a surf school. There you can hire kayaks, kite surfing equipment and SUP paddleboards: Sea Sports Dublin.

SUP Paddling and Kayaking in Dun Laoghaire Harbour

Dun Laoghaire is a district in the south of Dublin. There is a large marina where you can hire SUP paddleboards. Provider: Big Style.

Kayaking on the Grand Canal

The grand Canal is actually a nice little canal that is now only used by recreational water sports enthusiasts. It runs from Dublin Harbour to the southern River Shannon. Here, in southwestern Dublin, you can rent a kayak. Provider: Extreme Time Off.

Wake boarding in Dublin Harbour

The Grand Canal flows into Dublin Harbour at the Grand Canal Dock. There is a wakeboarding facility there. Provider: Wakedock.

Swimming at the National Aquatic Centre

Have you always wanted to swim with the Irish national swimmers? In the north-west of Dublin you’ll find the National Aquatic Centre.

Swimming at Dollymount Beach

I’ve already mentioned Dollymount Beach just outside Dublin because you can surf and kayak there. Of course, you can also swim or just go for a swim!

Finally

The Irish love sports and Dublin has a few options for water sports.

Combine a few days in Dublin with water activities and enjoy the Irish capital more actively than most!

You can rejoin the rest of your group for pub and life music 🙂 .

Have a great time in Dublin!
